Drawing superheroes!
This link takes you to a page with a bunch of other links to draw various superheroes:
http://www.drawinghowtodraw.com/stepbystepdrawinglessons/category/drawing-cartoons/drawing-comics-super-heroes/
This is sort of a generic superhero - you can customize him - change up his costume & give him a logo - to make him your own:
http://www.drawinghowtodraw.com/stepbystepdrawinglessons/category/drawing-cartoons/drawing-comics-super-heroes/
This link claims to show you how to draw in DC or Marvel style - but I believe it's another collection of links to draw various characters:
http://drawsketch.about.com/od/cartooning/tp/Create-Your-Own-Superhero-Character.htm
This is not a drawing tutorial, but rather a program of some sort on the website to allow you to create your own hero - you can visit this if you need a break from drawing:

Value drawings of food
Objectives:
- Drawing from observation – you will be using reference photos
- Creating an interesting composition – be conscious of the negative space
- Creating distinct value – each picture must have a full range of value – light and dark areas, as well as mid-tones – use your value scales to help you if necessary
Directions:
Find at least three reference photos. They can be related, but do not have to
be. They can also be three different
pictures of the same food items.
Finished picture will consist of three separate drawings –
one large, two small. You will must use
at least two or three different types of media – you can choose from pencil,
colored pencil, watercolor, pen, or marker.
Sketch out your ideas (sketches will be part of your
progress grade) – decide which picture you want to be the large picture, which
pictures do you want to be in color and which in black & white or in
greytones.
Instructions for your drawing:
- Determine the three sections on your paper. Create a half inch border around the three sections.
- Lightly sketch out your main objects. Fill the page and create an interesting composition. Remember to not place the drawing in the center of the page. It’s okay to have objects moving out of the picture “frame”. Placing something off center, a little more to the side will make it more interesting to a viewer.
- Gradually build up the details. Remember that it is easier to darken an area than it is to lighten an area.
- Be sure you have a full range of value in your picture.

Pick three characters (you may also search on your own if the characters you want to draw are not included on the page). Draw a picture using the three characters you've selected. They can be in any setting you want. Add color to them to complete the picture.
If you don't want to draw all three on the same page at the same time, you can always cut out your drawings and then arrange them on a separate page.

Art in the news: A "new" painting by Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Van Gogh died in 1890, and yet he and his work are still very much in the news today.
A recent discovery of one of his paintings has prompted quite a bit of media attention. Very big in the art world. You can read about it here: http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/09/world/europe/netherlands-van-gogh-new-painting/index.html and there's a bit more about it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/10/arts/design/new-van-gogh-painting-discovered-in-amsterdam.html?_r=0

This story talks about the transition of Van Gogh's art from a dark, somber paintings to the vivid, colorful work for which he is best known. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/features/vincent-van-gogh-how-two-years-in-the-paris-made-him-into-a-master-8829987.html
Find examples of Van Gogh's earlier work, such as The Potato Eaters and contrast that to his later work. What kind of differences do you see? Any similarities? What does the article suggest caused this change in style? What do you think caused this change in his style?
Take the time to look up some more examples of Van Gogh's work. Which is your favorite or least favorite? What do you like or dislike about his work?
Why do you think his work remains important today?
Bonus: Trailer for Vincent and the Doctor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Yia3h6CQ0g
